June 12, 2010Harvard report on BC’s mining regime and First Nations (1mb PDF)

The Harvard report on BC’s mining regime and First Nations was released on June 6th 2010.  It is a fantastic document which the Keyohs can use in future dealings with government, whether it be for mining or forestry. Of specific interest for you is the discussion about the keyoh system which is also intact at Takla first Nation.  The report contrasts the keyoh system with the Indian act governance of band councils.  The report concludes that the Takla people have the right to self-determination, which means they can choose who will represent them respecting Crown consultation, whether that is the band council or the keyoh holders directly (see pages 6, 17 and 22 to 23).
